About Scotties
Is a Scottie right for you?
Scottie lovers know that this breed will make a wonderful, gentle, loving, and protective companion. But for the uninitiated, Scotties can be a challenge. Scotties are not the breed for everyone, so we try to make sure that you know something about this breed before you make the long term commitment to care for and love each other. Here’s what you should know before you consider adopting a Scottie.
Breed Basics. The Scottish Terrier hails from Scotland and was bred as ground dogs to hunt rabbit, otter, fox, badger and other den animals. They have short legs, long bodies, and breed standard for weight is between 19 and 23 lbs. Don’t let their size fool you, Scotties are smart, brave, hardy little dogs who are versatile and up for any adventure. They are active and need daily walks mixed in with some games and off leash romp time in a fenced area. Failure to properly exercise this breed can result in destructive behaviors in the home. The Scottie has a wire coat that needs maintenance. A few minutes each day with a brush and comb will keep the coat in tip top condition. They should be fully groomed every six to eight weeks. Scotties come in black, wheaten, or brindle and have a 12-15 year lifespan.
Breed Characteristics. Scotties require consistent, gentle training from all family members. The Scottie has a tendency to be a bit stubborn. They are independent with a mind of their own. They obey grudgingly and at their own speed. They have a tendency to be a one man or one family dog. If not properly trained, these intelligent dogs will easily assume the role of pack leader, particularly over children too young to assume a leadership role in their training. A Scottie can easily adjust to children, but children must understand that they are not a pet to be carried all around, have their ears pulled or be ridden upon. If you like an immaculate house, a Scottie is not for you. They track in dirt from outside and carry in leaves, and other interesting things they wish to share with you. They are diggers and can rearrange your beautiful landscape.
If a Scottie feels you are a friend, he is gentle, loving, and protective. To those who appreciate his unique character, The Scottish Terrier is a friend and companion, second to none.
